Pranab Mukherjee was a veteran politician who served as the 13th President of India. A Bharat Ratna awardee, his political career spanned over five decades during which he occupied several ministerial portfolios in the Government of India. Mukherjee was Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. He was elected to Rajya Sabha five times and twice to Lok Sabha. Mr. Mukherjee served as the Leader of both houses of Parliament. He was the principal and architect of Sonia Gandhi's ascension to the party's presidency in 1998. Mukherjee was considered the sharpest mind and the prime troubleshooter in the government led by Manmohan Singh.
Born in a Bengali family in Mirati West Bengal, Pranab Mukherjee hailed from an educated family. His father Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee was active in the Indian independence movement and a member of the West Bengal Legislative Council between 1952 and 1964. After graduating from Suri Vidyasagar College in Suri (Birbhum), he earned MA degree in Political Science & History and LL.B. degree; both from the University of Calcutta. Before entering active politics he was an upper-division Clerk in the Office of Deputy Accountant-General (Post and Telegraph) in Calcutta. For a brief period, Mukherjee also worked as a Lecturer(Assistant Professor) of Political Science at Vidyanagar College, Kolkata, and as a Journalist with the Desher Dak (Call of Motherland).
Mukherjee's political career began in 1969 when he managed the successful Midnapore by-election campaign of an independent candidate, V. K. Krishna Menon. His election management was recommended by then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, who recruited him to her party, the Indian National Congress. He became a member of the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of the Indian parliament) in July 1969 and was re-elected to the house in 1975, 1981, 1993, and 1999. He first made it to Indira Gandhi’s council of ministers in 1972 and never looked back. A quintessential Congressman for five decades Mukherjee hold some of the most powerful portfolios - finance, commerce, external affairs and defence - in Congress governments. Mukherjee was considered the prime troubleshooter in the government led by Manmohan Singh.Mukherjee also served on the board of governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, Asian Development Bank and African Development Bank. He served as the 13th President of India from 2012 until 2017. Pranab Mukherjee was conferred Padma Vibhushan in 2008 and Bharat Ratna in 2019.
